Adolf Bock was born in Berlin and lived in Germany until 1945. He became a leading maritime artist recording submarines, ships and U boats during the War. His works are now in museums in Germany, Finland and Denmark. Adolf Bock later settled in Finland and a book on his paintings was published in Germany in 2001 - Hans-Walter Hansen: marine painter Adolf Bock. Leben und Werk . Life and work. Koehler, Hamburg 2001, ISBN 9783782208123 .

The Dutch oil company, Shell, operated the Macuba from 1955 to 1957. She was launched in 1931 and had an interesting history, being hit in 1943, a munity in 1945 and being scrapped in 1957. The above watercolour was probably commissioned to mark the new arrival of the motor tanker, as she had the ship trial on 30th June 1931. More information on the motor tanker Macuba can be found on the website....helderline.nl
