CECIL G J HAY (1899-1974)

A Collection of Lustreware

Cecil George Jackson Hay and his twin sister, Ceilia Elizabeth Campbell Hay, were born on 14th August 1899. Their mother was Janet Drew who was born on 1st April 1869. She married Cecil Godfrey Hay on 22nd September 1898. Cecil Hay senior died on 20th March 1919, leaving the young artist to continue with his education in Scotland. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and the Royal Scottish Academy. During his life he did not produce many paintings and so they are difficult to find. However his unusual subject matter makes his paintings sought after and instantly recognisable. He had a theme of painting lustreware and kitchenware and would often include a Japanese print. The above painting is typical of his best work. In later life he moved from Glasgow and retired to live in Canterbury in Kent. This painting was exhibit No.391 at the Royal Institute of Fine Art, 1955.
