James Webb, the artist, was born and lived all of his life in Chelsea. As a painter of marine and landscape subjects, he was influenced by JMW Turner with his coastal scenes of England, Wales, Holland and the Rhine. He exhibited in London between 1850 and 1880, including 29 paintings at the Royal Academy, and others at the British Institute, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and at Suffolk Street. His works can be seen in the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert and in many other museums.
