Bennett-Oates was born in London and studied at the Wimbledon College of Art, winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art from 1948 to 1951. He is acknowledged for his draughtsmanship and technique which was influenced by the very best of the Dutch School. His paintings of flowers are now much sought after and the above example was purchased from the 1996 Exhibition hosted by E. Stacy-Marks, Eastbourne.
