Doyly John (1906-1993)
Portrait of Joan,
the Artist's Wife
D'oyly-John took a commission with the Provost Corps at the outbreak of World War 2, but was badly wounded by a bomb in 1945. During his convalescence, he took up painting and discovered a genius for the use of vivid colours in producing brilliant scenes of Italy and the South of France. His full name was Cecil Rochfort D'oyly John (sometimes recorded as Doyly-John). He lived in Brighton and later moved to Rottingdean. A number of his paintings were aquired by the late HM Queen Mother for the Royal Collection. Frost & Reed in Worthing staged several exhibitions of his work.
