D'Oyly John was born near Johannesburg in South Africa in 1906. He was educated at the old private Felsted School in Essex between 1920 and 1924. His career as an artist began in 1945 and by 1948 his unusual bright paintings of the south of France and the Mediterranean were being exhibited at the prestigious gallery of Frost and Reed in London's Bond Street. Frost and Reed also opened art galleries in Bristol and Worthing which helped make the artist so popular in the 1950s and 1960s. D'Oyly John died in Rottingdean, Sussex in 1993. His paintings can be seen in museums in the United Kingdom and in the United States of America.
