Canadian-born Elizabeth Adela Armstrong was brought to London by her mother to study at the South Kensington Art School aged 14. She lived in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, next door to Dante Gabriel Rossetti. She returned to Canada due to her father's ill health and then studied under William Merritt Chase in New York. Following his advice, she received further training in Munich and continued her early studies with short trips to many European cities. She was a prolific artist until she married Stanhope Forbes in 1889. They formed the Newlyn Art School and her paintings are now in many museums including the Penlee House Gallery, Penzance.
