Birdham harbour lies four miles south of Chichester in West Sussex. This is an unusual subject for the artist, but it is not the only example with a nautical theme. Sir William did of course marry into a naval family and served in the navy himself, as did his son Francis Russell Flint. The original watercolour 'The Frances and Jane at Birdham' was sold to Agnews for 30 guineas in 1931. It was later acquired by the Hereford Town Museum for their collection.
