Francis Russell Flint was the son of Sir William Russell Flint and was educated at Cheltenham College and H.M.S. Conway. He then studied art at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, and then at the Royal Academy Schools and then in Paris. His landscape and coastal paintings were clearly influenced by his father. The above painting shows young women working on the fishing boats before the temperature becomes too hot. Francis painted in both oils and watercolours. His paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Society of Marine Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and at the Imperial War Museum (he was an Official War Artist during World War Two). His pictures were mainly of marine subjects and were reproduced in many publications including Royal Academy Illustrated, Illustrated London News, Sketch and Tatler. He wrote for The Artist and The Studio and several books on watercolour painting. He became Vice President of the Royal Watercolour Society. Today, his work can be viewed at museums and galleries including the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall.
