Hugh Boycott Brown was a marine artist
whose work was to be greatly influenced by the French Impressionists. He was
born in Bushey, Hertfordshire, and was encouraged to paint from an early age by
his father who was the artist Allan Robert Brown. Following his education, Hugh
studied at the Heatherley's School of Art. He continued painting during his
career in the army and then as an art teacher. His paintings were exhibited at
the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of
British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and at the Royal Institute of
Painters in Watercolours.
Boycott-Brown was also a leading member of the
Wapping Group of Artists. It was founded in 1946 and they met on the banks of
the River Thames to encourage paintings by its members. In 2005, a book was
published, titled "The Wapping Group of Artists - Sixty years of Painting by the
Thames". Inside the book, there is a photograph of the artist and some of his
paintings.
Today his work can be seen at the National Maritime Museum,
Cornwall, and also at the Bushey Museum & Art Gallery.
