Nevinson studied in London at the St John's School of Art and then at the Slade School. His father was a radical journalist and his mother was an activist in the campaign for women's rights. Having moved to Paris to work as a journalist and artist, he became an important figure in the French 'avant garde'. In 1914, as a pacifist, he refused to become involved in combat duties but his Red Cross work in France inspired his famous paintings of war.
