Tom Lloyd or artist full name, Thomas James Lloyd, is regarded as one of the best Victorian artists. From 1870, he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, and at the Old Watercolour Society. After several homes in London, he moved to Yapton in Sussex, where he painted a number of coastal and figurative scenes. On the rear of this painting, the artist has signed and titled the work, and has added his address of 6 Primrose Hill Studios, Fitzroy Road, London NW1. Research has shown that this address dates the painting to between 1885 and 1888.
