George Walker was born in Stepney, in London's East End in April 1929. Working as a porter in Billingsgate fish market, he trained as a boxer and went on to win the light heavyweight championship in 1951. George's boxing career ended in 1953 in a bloody brawl against Denis Powell. Although Powell gained the title of the new British light heavyweight, he never fought again because of the injuries he received in the Walker fight. George Walker recovered from the fight and used his experience to manage his brother, Billy Walker, who became better known than he did as a boxer. The money he gained from managing his brother was used to start his property business which he successfully grew into the Brent Walker empire.
