Arthur Wardle was born in London and was aged just 16 when he exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy. In 1880 he
lived in Oakley Square, Camden, but artistic success enabled him to move in 1892 to the more upmarket address
of 34 Alma Street in St John's Wood. Arthur Wardle is recognised today as the most important Victorian painter
of dogs. In his lifetime, he exhibited over 100 paintings at the Royal Academy and many paintings at the Society of British Artists.
