Arthur Wardle was probably the most important Victorian dog artist. During his lifetime, he exhibited over 100 paintings at the Royal Academy and many more at the Society of British Artists. He was born in London and exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy when just 16 years old. Records show that he lived in Oakley Square in Camden in 1880 and by 1892, he had moved to the more upmarket address of 34 Alma Street, St John's Wood which was due to his success as an artist.
