D’Oyly John was born in South Africa but was educated in England at the old private Felsted School, Essex between 1920 and 1924. His career as an artist began in 1945 and by 1948 his unusual bright paintings of the South of France and the Mediterranean were being exhibited at the prestigious gallery of Frost and Reed in London’s Bond Street. The late Queen Mother acquired several of his paintings after she admired them on the walls of Treetops following her stay in Kenya. His fame was assured when prints of his work sold in the thousands in the 1950s and 1960s. His paintings can be seen in museums in the United Kingdom and in the United States of America. He visited the West Indies several times, travelling by merchant ship, in search of unspoilt villages to paint.
