Lionel Percy Smythe exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1863 and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours from 1881. He became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1892. He and his wife Alice settled in Normandy and the area became the main inspiration for his art. Smythe became associated with the Idyllic School. His paintings can be seen in The National Maritime Museum, The V&A, The Tate Gallery and the William Morris Museum.
